Belle Isle Canal Boat Launch
Since the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) took over the management of Belle Isle in 2013, improvements have been continuous on the island. From 2014 to 2016, MDNR completed approximately $8,000,000 in infrastructure repairs and assessments, including Lake Muscoday and Detroit Yacht Club (DYC) Canal Boat Launch which NFE is proud to say was our project.
The project called for design and construction administration services for the construction of an ADA accessible canoe/kayak facility at Lake Muscoday and DYC. The project included the design of ADA accessible concrete walkways, pavilion structure, amenities and a pre-manufactured canoe/kayak launch for access to both Lake Muscoday and the Detroit River. Work also included improvements to the existing parking facilities to meet ADA accessibility requirements.
The water elevations on the Detroit River and understanding of typical ice flow was a critical element for NFE during the design and placement of the canoe/ kayak launch. NFE coordinated with the Army of Corps of Engineers, MDNR and MDOT to successfully complete the project. The project was completed in 2015, resulting in a successful canoe/kayak launch pad for the island.
NFE is proud to have worked on infrastructure improvements for the embetterment of the island. Belle Isle is a gem that overflows with historical, cultural and recreational advantages.
