Sterling Heights Park Improvements

Sterling Heights was incorporated as a city in 1968, and is the fourth-largest in Michigan with approximately 132,000 residents. The City has five major parks and 26 neighbor parks.

 

Prior to the November election in 2016, the City had no dedicated funding source for improving its parks. In November 2016, the residents of Sterling Heights passed the Recreating Recreation millage to fund approximately $45 million in proposed parks and recreation improvements, including a new community center, skatepark, ice rink and splash pad.

 

Other improvements to the City’s five major parks and to 20 of its 26 neighborhood parks are to include: resurfacing paths; replacing entrance signs and play structures; installing ground-mounted amenities, such as picnic tables and benches; resurfacing parking lots; installing entrance gates; and renovating and re-purposing athletic courts and fields.

 

Dorchen/Martin Associates of Southfield was chosen by the City to provide architecture and planning services for its park improvements. Dorchen/Martin in turn contracted with NFE to provide civil engineering and land surveying services.

 

The first round of parks to get improvements included five neighborhood parks and one major park. NFE’s scope of work for each park included topographic surveys, engineering site plans, soil erosion control plans, construction staking, construction administration and inspection services during construction. Also included in the first round of improvements was a new skatepark at the City’s Municipal Center which NFE provided a topographic survey for.

 

Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park is located in the neighborhood bounded by Schoenherr, 19 Mile, Hayes and Clinton River roads. Improvements to the park included resurfaced athletic courts, new pavilion, new play structure and resurfaced paths.

 

Benjamin Hadley Park

 

Hadley Park is 2.5 acres in size and is located in the north-central portion of the City in the neighborhood bounded by Canal, M-53 and Clinton River roads. Improvements to the park included resurfaced paths and new play structure.

 

Thomas L. Chappelle Park

 

Chappelle Park is a 10.9-acre park located in the eastern portion of the City in the neighborhood bounded by Dodge Park, Metropolitan Parkway, Schoenherr and 15 Mile roads. Improvements to the park included new sled hill, new play structure, new pavilion and resurfaced paths.

 

Imus Park

 

Imus Park is 10.9 acres in size and is located in the neighborhood bound by Van Dyke, 17 Mile, Dodge Park and Metropolitan Parkway roads. Improvements to this park included a new road from Dodge Park Road, new sidewalks, resurfaced paths and resurfaced athletic courts.

 

Hampton Park

 

Hampton Park is located in the neighborhood bound by Ryan, 18 Mile, Mound and 17 Mile roads. Improvements to this park included new parking lot, resurfaced athletic courts, new play structure, new pavilion and resurfaced paths.

 

Joseph J. Delia Park

 

Delia Park is a large 133.4-acre sports complex located in the northwestern portion of the City fronting both 18 Mile Road and Ryan Road. It contains the largest concentration of athletic fields within the City. Improvements to this park included resurfaced tennis courts.

 

Skatepark

 

The new skatepark at the City’s Municipal Center near the intersection of Utica and Dodge Park roads is a first-class skatepark for skateboards, scooters and BMX mountain bikes. The park was designed by Evergreen Skateparks LLC, based in Portland, Oregon.

 

All work on the above sites was completed in November 2016. NFE continues to work with Dorchen/Martin on improvements to other parks in Sterling Heights, and are currently overseeing the civil engineering work for major improvements to Dodge Park. This park will be getting a new splash pad, ice rink, farmer market pavilion, amphitheater, volleyball courts, turf mini soccer fields and other aesthetic improvements.
